Homework at Mayfield forms a vital part of our curriculum as it helps students to retain the knowledge gained from their lessons and encourages them to develop resilience, work independently and build strong revision habits to help them to succeed in their assessments. 

This helps with something we call 'Stickability' which is one of our teaching and learning principles, this is technique which helps the knowledge we teach to stick in their memory more effectively. It avoids overloading the short-term memory, through independent practice and spaced recall which helps to transfer knowledge to the long-term memory and build strong foundations called schemas with which to build on.  

All students from each year group are given a printed copy of a Knowledge Organiser which has a summary of the topics that they are learning in that term and the core knowledge that they need to remember. These are also sent out digitally on classcharts and can be found linked below. Students can get a new printed copy by going to pupil services. 

Homework will be to use these knowledge organisers to complete revision tasks to help imbed the information covered in class and identified on the printed organisers. Tasks will be set individually by class teachers who may suggest certain revision tasks and techniques, but students should experiment until they find what works best for them to help them get the best out of this practice. This sets them up well for exam practice in Year 10 and 11.

In lessons, teachers may ask to see evidence of the revision homework completed, this could be brining in revision cards completed, or mind maps created, or it may be a retrieval quiz to see how effectively student can recall the information they have been looking over. This will be determined by the individual class teacher. All tasks will be set on classcharts.
