Year 7 Homework/Preparation for Learning

At Mayfield we call all homework ‘Preparation for Learning’ or ‘Prep’ for short. Prep is an important part of every child’s learning as it:

    • Help your child practice what they have been learning
    • Helps your child remember what they have learned
    • Prepares your child for new learning they will do in class
    • Gets your child into good habits for revising for future assessments.

Each subject sets one prep project per year for pupils to complete (apart from Maths who set prep every lesson). In order to help your child organise their time the projects are set on the following rota:

As you can see this half term your child will be completing prep projects in Dance, ICT and Chemistry, as well as their regular Maths prep.

Each prep project is split into smaller tasks – your child’s subject teacher will introduce the tasks in lesson and explain what is expected. They will also set deadlines for each task so your child knows when to hand them in – your child will be expected to write these deadlines in their planner so you can see when they are due in. Instructions for all prep subjects can be seen by following the ‘Student Prep’ link on the Mayfield website and navigating to ‘Year 7 Prep’ and then ‘Autumn 1’. If it requires a username and password pupils should use their school username and password given to them in ICT. Pupils have been shown all of this in assembly today and will revisit the projects in their ICT lessons this week to give them a chance to navigate the folders.

Although it is important that prep is completed, it is also important that pupils do not spend too long on each project – the recommended amount of time per subject is 30 minutes per week. Should your child be spending longer than this on their prep then please help them check that they have completed the task and encourage them to have a break. It is also important that pupils spread their workload across the half term – therefore, to avoid overload, it is important that they tackle them when they have been set by their teacher.

Should you have any questions about prep in general please contact Mr Ryan Gibson (Assistant Headteacher)  at [email protected] or on 02392 693432. If you have any specific questions regarding prep tasks then please contact your child’s subject teacher.
