On 27th October 2017, 29 Year 8 students made the trip up to London to visit the Houses of Parliament. The students demonstrated excellent behaviour throughout the day. Leaving early we took advantage of the time on the coach to discuss key events in Parliamentary history including the Magna Carta, Gunpowder Plot and the Civil War. We also discussed the British constitution and separation of powers to explore the role parliament plays in running the country.

When we arrived, strict security meant everyone had a bag search and went through airport style checks. Students then had a detailed tour of Parliament including the Queens Robing room (and private toilet!), the House of Lords, House of Commons and Atrium. We were all amazed by the grandeur and the exciting tales from behind the scenes.

After our tour the students took part in a workshop which included an interactive visual film explaining how democracy in Britain works. Then an additional surprise was a personal visit from our MP, Penny Mordaunt. She kindly came to see us and talked about her experiences in Parliament. Students were then able to quiz her about local and national events and changes. Many of our students were inspired by the tales and are left with keen ambitions to be the next Prime Minister!
